This week at the cinema we have Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Change-Up.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is something like the ninth or tenth film in the series. This version is the prequel and shows the genesis of the ape conquering. I have read the original book, but only seen one of the films in its entirety (the Tim Burton one). The book differs vastly from the film and even though the book was rather enjoyable, the film was pretty basic and didn't really live up to my expectations for Burton's work nor for a modern day reboot. Today we have a new reboot with full on CGI apes via the guy who played Gollum in Lord of the Rings, Andy Serkis. This dude is amazing at bringing characters to life, but there's something a little troubling about how realistic, yet fake the apes faces look in the trailers. They're very realistic in their detail, but they're just a little too human-like for my taste. It makes them seem kind of scary, which I guess is the point since they take over the whole damn planet.
The Change-Up is the story of two people who want to switch lives and it happens. This story has been told so many times in so many forms that I've lost count and don't care to recollect. The one thing this film does have is a cast of actors that are funny. While early ratings for the film have bombed, to put it nicely, I feel that there may be some comedy resonance to this film. I'm sure there will be no life changing meaning or gut busting laughter, but when it comes out on dvd I'll give it a look see.
