Once you read the synopsis of this film you'll most likely say, "meh." That's what I did until a buddy of mine said that I had to watch it.
So I popped it in and...
I felt like the main character was based off of every conversation I ever had with one of my friends, the one who suggested the movie in the first place.
The opening monologue sounds like it was lifted from a tap on my cell phone.
The Plot: An everyman with above-average intelligence, that has migraines and insomnia (so do I), gets fed up with a world that seems to be turning to shit right before his eyes. He makes comments on the status of the world and the fact that no one stands for anything anymore. Everything is just pop culture this and reality tv that. Then the protagonist meets a 16 year old girl who feels the same way that he does and together they go on a killing spree, murdering ignorant, crass individuals until the climax of the film and the credits roll.
You can already assume how the film will end and I assure you it goes exactly how you think and the foreshadowing in the movie is completely unnecessary. It's not like the grown man and the teenage girl are going to lock arms and skip off into the sunset after slaying a bunch of "innocent" people.
The film is brilliantly written and makes very succinct judgements about the world we live in and the things that encompass our daily lives. The biggest kicker for me, other than the fact that I have uttered almost the exact same words as the dialogue in the film, was that it was written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait.
If you don't know who Bobcat is, go watch Police Academy 2, 3, or 4. He's the guy that talks like his split personality is trying to scream out the side of a face that's trying to suppress an anxiety attack, all the while trying to whisper sentences in German. He also does standup too.
I was utterly shocked to find out that he wrote that film. It's not that I can't imagine him being capable, it's just that I grew up with him spitting syllables out the side of his mouth through the 1980s and being a goofy, hilarious guy. This is one of the best films I've seen in a long time, but it won't be for everyone...I promise you that.
