This week at the cinema - May 25: Chernobyl Diaries and Men in Black 3

This week at the cinema we have two vastly different films; Chernobyl Diaries and Men in Black 3.

Chernobyl Diaries is another one of the far-too-many shaky cam/found footage scary movies that have become so popular in recent times. Even though I'm a big fan of horror films I probably won't see this film...at least not until dvd. I like the idea of Chernobyl being a host to radioactive freaks that hunt you down, but didn't they make this film about 100 times already. I remember one called The Hills Have Eyes that was remade a few years ago, with similar premise a without the epileptic cameraman. When this new genre of scary movies began, it was cool and new, but now it's beyond played out. I'm seriously sick of all the shaky cam nonsense. The only reason you should have a video with that amount of disruption is during an earthquake...oh no...I think I just gave Hollywood their next big idea.

Men in Black 3 is being released a full decade after the previous one. Wow, 10 years. That should prove to us that no original content will come out of Hollywood for a long time. Just think about that. They made a sequel to a movie from a decade ago when there are literally thousands of other ideas that could have been put on the screen. If you're asking why, then you probably don't know a lot about how films get funded. It boils down to this, producers don't want to spend money on something and gamble whether they'll make their money back or not, so they've increasingly only spent money on things that already have a following, like a sequel, an adaptation from a book or television series, or a remake/reboot. This will usually ensure that they make a profit or at least break even. Face the facts, the world is based on greed. They'll only spend money if they think they'll make more. Good business logic, but our entertainment suffers and it will never change as long as they're making money this way.
