This week at the Cinema - July 29: Cowboys & Aliens, The Smurfs, and Crazy, Stupid, Love

This week at the cinema we have Cowboys & Aliens, The Smurfs, and Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Cowboys & Aliens may possibly be the worst idea to hit the cinema in a long time. The premise is just completely pointless. If a species is intelligent enough to master intergalactic travel and they made it to Earth, the cowboys and their 6-shooters wouldn't stand a chance. Here's how the opening/ending scene should really look. Open on aliens passing by a small town, a cowboy mumbles something ignorant, then fires his gun at the alien ship, the aliens destroy all life on Earth...THE END. The film stars Daniel Craig (yes, 007 is a cowboy...I know, I know), Olivia Wilde, and Harrison Ford. It's also directed by Jon Favreau.

The Smurfs is another show that Hollywood has stolen from my childhood and turned into a CGI film. Since I'm a day late on this post, I've read that it's beating Cowboys & Aliens at the box office...really a kids film is doing better than the dumbest film in history, who would've thought it?

Crazy, Stupid, Love looks like another generic romcom, but this one stars Ryan Gosling, who is notorious for only picking films that he really likes. This is a weird combination. Gosling only does artsy films and movies that usually fly under the radar, but this is more of a Hollywood type film. Did he sell out or is the script for this film really that good? He probably needed the paycheck, but the film is getting pretty good reviews. The movie also stars Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, and Marisa Tomei.
